If waiting for a tutor: You and your tutor will decide where and when you meet. You must meet twice each week for 2 hours each time. You must meet in a public place or on the computer. You cannot meet with a tutor in your home.
When will I start?
If waiting for a class: Class begins in January, April, July, and October. We will try our best to get you in a class next quarter. It will depend on your level and availability.
If waiting for a tutor: We will start looking for a tutor for you now, but there is a waitlist. Most students get matched with a tutor after 2-3 months of waiting, but it could be longer or shorter.
What is the attendance policy?
If waiting for a class: There is a long waitlist. To join class, you must be ready to dedicate 4 hours each week. You are required to attend 75% of their classes. If you miss more than that, you will lose your spot in the class.
If waiting for a tutor: There is a long waitlist. You must be ready to dedicate 4-hours each week. If you no-call, no-show your tutor two times in one month, we will give up your tutor for another student on the waitlist.
What if I can’t come to class?
If waiting for a class: You are expected to attend every class or tell your teacher why you cannot attend. If you cannot go to your class, please notify your teacher BEFORE class begins. Your teacher will tell you how to contact them.
If waiting for a tutor: You are expected to attend every lesson or tell your tutor why you cannot attend. If you cannot go to your class, please notify your tutor at least 2 hours BEFORE class begins. Your tutor will tell you how to contact them.
How will I know when my class starts?
We will send you a text message and an email when we have a class available. All emails will say “Literacy Pittsburgh” in the subject line. All text messages will begin with “This is Literacy Pittsburgh.” Please look for these messages and read them carefully!
Do you offer childcare?
No. Literacy Pittsburgh does not provide childcare for any in-person meetings or classes. You need to find someone to watch your children. We also offer online classes so that you can stay at home with your children if necessary.
What if I need help?
Literacy Pittsburgh can help our students! We have career advisors that can help you get a job, and we have student service coordinators that can help you with other problems, such as needing food, housing, or childcare. You can ask for help on our student portal under “jobs” and “student support”. www.LPstudent.com
