As some of you may know, the tutoring program here at Literacy Pittsburgh is expanding this program year! We will be looking for new tutors in Washington, Bulter, and Westmoreland County. With this expansion, we want future tutors to be aware of the support that is available to them while they tutor with us. This article provides a look behind the scenes of the support that all of our tutors are provided with beyond the initial tutor training. Each year our tutors fill out a pulse survey that provides us with information on their experience. Year after year, we hear from tutors that they feel well supported in their role. In the most recent pulse survey completed by tutors in the Spring of 2026, many of our tutors told us that they feel they have the resources they need to be successful, and that they feel well supported. One tutor noted that the most rewarding part of tutoring with Literacy Pittsburgh is “being told I make a difference in someone’s life”. Our tutors are provided a variety of support throughout their experience tutoring with us, including a Program Coordinator they can contact at any time with questions, comments, or concerns. They also receive lesson plans, a website dedicated to supporting them, and access to one-on-one coaching and support from the Tutoring Specialist.
Every tutor is provided with a Program Coordinator who works to support them daily with any questions they may have about their student, textbook, or other resources! One of our Program Coordinators Miranda Pino says this about the work that she does supporting her tutors, “supporting our tutors reminds me that having good neighbors who support one another makes a community better”. Along with this support, tutors also have access to one-on-one coaching with the Tutoring Specialist. The Tutoring Specialist is available to coach tutors on teaching strategies, digital skills for tutoring online, support in choosing supplementary materials to use, and anything else a tutor may need while they are working with their student(s). Providing 1:1 support to tutors is very important because just as our adult learners need varying levels of support to make progress on their goals, we believe that our tutors deserve that same kind of support. While personalized and individualized support is important to us, Literacy Pittsburgh also provides a variety of resources to all of its tutors. We have created a website that is available on demand for tutors to use. On this website, tutors can find lesson plans, training videos, and a variety of other resources that support the work they do with their student(s). This is a website they can access at any time, and that we update often with new resources.
Overall, tutors at Literacy Pittsburgh feel well supported in their role, which is why we believe many of our tutors continue to tutor with us beyond the 6-month commitment we ask of them.
