In Pennsylvania, there are 33 adult and family literacy programs that receive Department of Education funding. Programs are evaluated and ranked on a variety of criteria from student enrollment to test scores to GED completion.

Literacy Pittsburgh led the state in many categories. During 2024-25, the last complete year compiled by the state, Literacy Pittsburgh enrolled 2,108 adults, which was 110% of our contracted enrollment for that program year. We outperformed all other programs in this metric. In total, we helped 3,200 students across our programs.

Our class-based instruction ranked second in the state for high school equivalency (GED) accomplishments. We were in the top third for educational gains.

Literacy Pittsburgh’s volunteer tutoring program is unparallelled. We are the largest tutoring program in the state with 527 students receiving this instructional model. We are number one for educational level gains, high school equivalency achievement, and educational level gains amongst tutoring programs.

Because of the support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, our students are equipped to make a difference for their families and for our region.

Literacy Pittsburgh (formerly Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council) helps create better lives through learning. Recognized as a national leader in adult and family literacy, Literacy Pittsburgh is the largest provider of adult basic education in Allegheny and Beaver Counties. Last year, Literacy Pittsburgh helped more than 4,000 individuals acquire the skills needed to reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their communities. Literacy Pittsburgh provides free, personalized instruction in workforce readiness, high school diploma test preparation, digital literacy, English language learning, math, reading, and family literacy through one-to-one and small class instruction. Founded in 1982, it serves local adults through numerous neighborhood locations and its Downtown Pittsburgh Learning Center.
