We are pleased to recognize two of our staff members, Lisa Morse and Lauren Ramon, for their dedicated service to Literacy Pittsburgh.
Lisa Morse
North Hills - Butler County Program Coordinator
10 Years of Service
Although not originally from Pittsburgh, Lisa Morse has called the area home since 1985, when she moved here as a newlywed to attend graduate school. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and a Master of Arts in Slavic Languages and Literature, both from the University of Pittsburgh. Having spent much of her childhood in the Philippines surrounded by people from around the globe, joining Literacy Pittsburgh felt like a welcoming return to a multicultural environment.
Lisa is married to her college boyfriend, Travis, and they have two sons, both of whom have settled in Pittsburgh.
One accomplishment Lisa is particularly proud of is her work helping the team create and revise learning plans for tutors several years ago. While it was a time-consuming process, it meaningfully strengthened tutors' ability to support their students.
For Lisa, the best part of working at Literacy Pittsburgh is the community. “Working at Literacy Pittsburgh for me is all about the people,” Lisa shares. “I love interacting with people from so many different countries and different walks of life. Because I support both tutors and students, I have the opportunity to meet and influence a variety of people, and each story is unique.”
Lauren Ramon
Manager, English Language Learning
5 Years of Service
Raised in Mars, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh, Lauren Ramon has spent most of her life in the region. She originally studied 7–12 Language Arts education and earned her teaching license before pursuing graduate coursework in English at Gannon University. Lauren first joined Literacy Pittsburgh during an AmeriCorps service year in 2020 and has been an integral part of the team ever since.
Lauren takes immense pride in contributing to student success and supporting her colleagues. She is especially proud of her team for updating and aligning teaching approaches to deliver relevant content to English Language Learners, helping them live, work, attend school, and pursue their goals.
What Lauren loves most about Literacy Pittsburgh is the people she works with every day. “We have incredible, resilient students who show up despite the many challenges in their lives,” Lauren explains. “I also consider myself lucky to supervise dedicated teachers who show up with a sense of humor and curiosity, and to work with so many people who care so deeply about the work we do.”
Literacy Pittsburgh (formerly Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council) helps create better lives through learning. Recognized as a national leader in adult and family literacy, Literacy Pittsburgh is the largest provider of adult basic education in Allegheny and Beaver Counties. Last year, Literacy Pittsburgh helped more than 4,000 individuals acquire the skills needed to reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their communities. Literacy Pittsburgh provides free, personalized instruction in workforce readiness, high school diploma test preparation, digital literacy, English language learning, math, reading, and family literacy through one-to-one and small class instruction. Founded in 1982, it serves local adults through numerous neighborhood locations and its Downtown Pittsburgh Learning Center.
