Spotlight on Success: Troy

Aug 7, 2025Student Spotlights

Like many Americans, Troy dreamed of creating a better life for his family. He sought a career that would provide financial security and offer potential for growth. Troy found this opportunity in the construction field. He enrolled in Introduction to Construction Trades: A Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program, offered by Pittsburgh Gateways. Participants receive a stipend, child care, union partner sharing, construction math, OSHA, Flagger Certification, CPR, and so much more.

It was there that he met Literacy Pittsburgh math teacher Tina Burns. Tina explains, “Troy focused on every math concept, working hard to master it. He listened to every guest speaker, union member, and concept, and he took the program very seriously.”

Troy studied the coursework, completed his math class, and graduated from the program in March 2024, earning one of the highest scores in his cohort. He delivered the commencement address at the conclusion of the program. Troy was hired by the Laborers’ Union Local 1058 in Pittsburgh. His ability to listen and work hard impressed many.

Local 1058 leaders noticed that they had a leader in Troy, and nominated him for the Western Pennsylvania Apprentice of the Year. He won and was honored at a ceremony held at Acrisure Stadium. Additionally, Troy was invited to give a speech for the Department of Labor about how the program in the trades changed his life.

Troy is proud to be a part of the Laborers’ Union, Local 1058. His union works with Northeast Paving, and one project included the Parkway West near Pittsburgh International Airport. Troy stated that he is working hard. He comes home each evening tired, but he goes back out every day, proud to help rebuild Pittsburgh.  He stresses to anyone going into the trades that it is worth it.
