Hassan is a Data Coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing. Born in Afghanistan, Hassan came to the United States with nearly ten years of experience in software engineering and graduated from Kabul Central University.
In August of 2021, the Afghan government collapsed. Hassan was participating in a project that helped facilitate his move to the United States one year later. He enrolled in English classes at Literacy Pittsburgh. He heard about Literacy Pittsburgh’s Career Services in one of his classes. Hassan worked with Career Advisor Callie Angelo to reformat his resume, practice interview questions, and search for jobs.
“I gained very good knowledge about interviews and gained more confidence,” Hassan says. “I really appreciate Literacy Pittsburgh and Callie.”
“Almost all my friends were telling me I should start a normal job, a starter job, for my first job in the United States. But based on my experience and knowledge I wouldn’t accept a job that paid twelve or thirteen dollars per hour.” Hassan says. “If it wasn’t for Literacy Pittsburgh’s help, I couldn’t get the job I have.”
