A New Beginning in Pharmacy: Diana’s Journey

Mar 5, 2026Student Spotlights

Diana Yusupova moved to the United States from Ukraine in April 2023. Seeking safety and stability for her family amidst the war in her home country, Diana chose to settle in Pittsburgh to begin a new chapter.

In Ukraine, Diana was a dedicated healthcare professional. She holds a university degree in pharmacy and possesses many years of experience working as a pharmacist. While she is not currently practicing in her profession, her passion for healthcare remains her driving force as she navigates her new life in Pennsylvania.

“Right now, I am focused on learning English and preparing for my future career in the U.S.,” Diana explains. “I like helping people and working in healthcare. I would like to start working as a pharmacy assistant or technician and later grow to continue my career in pharmacy.”

Diana first learned about Literacy Pittsburgh through recommendations from local community members. Recognizing that English is essential for work, study, and daily life, she enrolled in classes in 2024 to bridge the gap between her professional expertise and her new environment.

“Studying at Literacy Pittsburgh is a very good experience,” Diana says. “The teachers are kind and patient. Literacy Pittsburgh means support, opportunity, and a new start for me.”

Since joining the program, Diana has seen a significant boost in her confidence. Her speaking and understanding have improved, bringing her one step closer to her goal of re-entering the medical field. When she isn't in the classroom, she stays busy practicing her English at home and spending quality time with her family.

To other students beginning their journey, Diana offers a piece of heartfelt advice: “Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Practice often and do not give up.”

As she looks toward the future, Diana is focused on reaching her English proficiency goals so she can continue her education and return to the pharmacy counters where she feels most at home.

“I am very thankful for Literacy Pittsburgh,” she shares. “Thank you for your patience and support. You help me believe in myself.”
