On Thursday, May 14, Literacy Pittsburgh gathered to celebrate our most recent GED graduates. Eighteen graduates walked across the stage at JCC-Greater Pittsburgh to commemorate this hard-earned achievement. A special shout-out to two of our grads who passed their last section the same week as graduation!
Mayor Corey O'Connor spoke to our graduates, congratulating them on their accomplishment. Joel Glinka of Highmark Wholecare provided the crowd with a wonderful commencement speech, and Dejah Monea once again attended as the guest vocalist.
As always, our favorite part of the GED graduation was inviting family members, friends, and mentors to come forward for an open mic session. Nearly every graduate came up to thank an array of people: parents, grandparents, children, friends, and their teachers. Several family members spoke about how proud they were of their graduating child, spouse, or parent.
We asked grads to share their greatest accomplishment since earning their diploma. Here is what some of them had to say:
Starting college
Joining the military
Being able to homeschool my son
Being able to be proud of myself for doing something challenging.
Getting a better job
We congratulate all of our grads and can’t wait to celebrate our current students next year!
