Accounting Essentials class recap

Oct 2, 2025Articles

We recently completed our first Accounting Essentials class, an exam prep course for the official Intuit Bookkeeping Professional certification. This certification, especially when paired with the QuickBooks certification, can open the door to a career in bookkeeping. Our first QuickBooks prep class is in session now.

Many of the nine students in first Accounting Essentials class began with no prior academic knowledge of bookkeeping. Through the 12-week course, they delved into accounting for assets, liabilities, and transactions, as well as reconciling financial statements. Our Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Garcia made herself available to the class to provide practical knowledge of these concepts and answer questions. At the end of the course, as with all our certification preparation courses, students had the opportunity to take the exam with a voucher provided by Literacy Pittsburgh, which is valid for two attempts.

Four students were successful on their first try at this challenging exam, with the rest preparing for their second try. Many of these students went on to join the QuickBooks certification course and are currently learning the software to put their newfound bookkeeping skills into practice.

One student originally came through our English-language programs, making significant English level gains over the years while simultaneously completing our Excel certification courses (both associate and expert levels). They then joined the Accounting Essentials course and progressed to QuickBooks.

Many other students blazed a path that’s new for Literacy Pittsburgh, attracted not by our core English language learning or GED programs, but by the certification courses themselves. These new students have been accumulating certifications in various MS Office programs and now bookkeeping fundamentals, preparing for careers in numerous industries.

Congratulations to our four newly certified bookkeeping professionals, and to the other five, we’re cheering you on as you prepare for the exam this fall!
